Help Make XM Radio Receivers Accessible to the Blind

I apologize to each of you for sending a mass mailing. However, the
following information came to my attention, and I want to share it. Even if
you are not blind or if you do not use XM, your help would go a long way
toward changing what may be the face of new and upcoming satelite radio
receivers. As you will see from an excerpt below of an e-mail I received
earlier today, XM is considering moving to a touch screen interface. this
will mean that all of us who are blind or have low vision will be locked out
from a fabulous source of entertainment. Please consider writing the
contact below, let him know that speech output is not only a benefit to the
blind, but will also benefit sighted folks in low-light situations as well
as ensure that those who are driving down the road will have access to the
radios without having to take their eyes off the road.

Hello all!
I was speaking with Mr. Ralph Stewart of My Radio Store Dot Com. I was
inquiring about which XM Radio Receiver was accessible to Blind Persons
these days!

A number of changes have taken place which necessitated some
changes in XM receivers. The demodulator needed to be turned down to
minimize interference to those listening to standard radio stations
especially in an automobile. Some people didn't like Howard Stern coming
over their favorite religious station as an example. Many of the newer XM
portables are using touch screens these days which aren't accessible for us!
Mr. Stewart then said it's about time for XM receivers to have audio
feedback or prompts for those who cannot see the screen. Some engineers he
spoke with said the chips used in XM receivers would easily support speech
output. He wants to know how many people would be interested in an XM
Receiver with speech? Please Email him at:

Hello, and I apologize for a group e-mail.

I am sending this to you because i have created a list of folks to whom I would like to write while away in class at Guide Dogs for the Blind. if it's ok, I'd like to keep you updated on my training as it progresses. if you want me to remove you, just say the word and I'll do that; I totally know we all get more darned e-mail than we can all possibly read, so i will not be offended.

madeline and I are making the transition, though it is painful for me. She is getting closer to Gary, and that's a good thing, though it does make me sad to know that our partnership has changed. But, On october 1, the day before my birthday, I'll meet my new guide and friend.

I hope you will find it possible to read my posts, but remember, if you want out, just say the word!

A New Old Radio Show for Marlaina

Hello, and sorry for the group e-mail.

I want to invite you to join me each Friday night at 8 Pacific, 11 Eastern,
for a new old internet radio show I'm doing called The Friday NightLight.

When I was a young girl, there was a very significant radio show in my life
called The NightLight. Several years ago, with the permission of the host
of the original NightLight, I brought the show back to internet radio via
Skybird Radio, www.skybirdradio.org.

Since that time, the owner of Skybird has passed through this life, and
those who respected Gary Bourgois and his talent are striving to keep
Skybird going. Recently, they contacted me to ask that I again join the
Friday night line-up.

Through the very generous facilities at shellworld Radio, I am able to
stream both to Shellworld and to Skybird and will be bringing the NightLight
back starting today, Friday December 9. It'll be 3 hours of stuff that

The Next Marlaina: Remembering Technology

As most of you know, I do a show on ACB Radio

on Sunday nights in North America. My upcoming show is special to me, for I
am dedicating it to a friend and colleague who was an icon in the industry
of providing adaptive technology solutions for people who are blind.
Russell Smith lost his life this past week in an airplane disaster. He and
his wife were flying back home from a conference to their residence in New
Zealand. As far as I know, the cause of the accident is not known, but
Russell's small plane apparently came apart in mid air.

To celebrate his life, I am hoping listeners both blind and sighted, will
call in and share memories of the technologies they have used from the
earliest things to what they presently use. Please read the announcement
below and if at all possible, please join me this Sunday!

As I'm sure you know, blind people throughout the world lost a solid friend
this week with the sudden and tragic death of Russell Smith. I worked with
Russell for 2 years while at HumanWare, and in fact just had a meeting with
him 3 weeks ago in which we discussed some ways in which my company could
collaborate again with HumanWare. I will miss Russell's friendship and his
vision to continue to improve and strengthen the technology used by people
who are blind. This show will be dedicated to Russell in my attempt to
remember him and more importantly, to celebrate his life!

Please join me to talk about your memories of technology--technology can be
the first computer you laid hands on or your first slate and stylus. Don't
be put off by the term technology, it isn't all high tech, some of that low
tech stuff is pretty cool, too. If you knew Russell, share your memories of
him with all of us. He was a heck of a guy, and his loss will be long felt.

An Evening at An Opera Without Much Music!

Most all of us have heard of the famous opera
Rigoletto
written by Giuseppe Verdi and it never looked like this!

Join Gary the Eye Guy, Madeline the Guide Dog and me as we meet the cast of
Pigoletto performed at the
E. B. Foote Winery in
Burien, Washington, my home town.
Burien, referred to here as Buriento, is located near an area known as White Center, or in Pigoletto Terms, Centre Blanc, Normandy Park, thus the Duke of Normandy, and Des Moines, from where the Countess Des Moi hales.

"BURIEN – Breeders Theater teams up with E.B. Foote Winery for its 10th production,
Pigoletto, an opera without (much) music. "Andrew Lloyd Webber and those guys who
wrote Les Miserables have made careers out of writing operas but calling them musicals," says BT founder and head writer T.M. Sell. "But if you called them what they are, you wouldn’t sell nearly as many tickets. So we should be able to call a musical an opera, just for the wee of it." During the podcast, you'll hear something from that other opera, Rigoletto, performed
by Andrea Bocelli from his album entitled Aria - The Opera Album. Mr. Bocelli is a wonderful tennor
who happens to be blind, so I feel a kindred spirit with him! And, from what I've read of him, he'd approve of Pigoletto!

We thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity, and express our deepest thanks to E. B.
Foote, and to Breeders Theater for allowing us to cover their opening night.
I apologize for volume fluxuations, it was my first recording using my newly acquired

Nickie Coby's Graduation Weekend, Part II

This is Podcast number 2, and several sound-seeing tours of Nickie Coby's graduation weekend, June 9, 2005. Nickie graduated from Forest Lake High School where she was chosen as one of 3 from among over 500 students to speak at the ceremony. To say I was bursting with pride as Nickie and Guide Dog Jullio independently navigated the graduation stage not once but twice would be to put it mildly. When Nickie attended Guide Dogs for the Blind she told me her dream was to be able to graduate with independence and dignity, and not with a sighted human guide. And that she did! This is my tribute to my young friend, and young woman who is going places with pride and dignity! Love ya, Nickie!

Hello all!

Well, Las Vegas continues to amaze me. I truly would love to know how people can live here during the summer time! We took Maddie out tonight close to midnight, and it was about 90 and dry dry heat. I'm looking forward to getting back to the Paciffic Northwest, but not before I enjoy the heck out of Vegas.

I played blackjack again today, this time with Scott marshall and Jason Castonguay. We had a ball. I'm still winning, I think, SMILE!

The day ended with lovely time spent with good friends in the Washington Council of the Blind Suite. A grand time was had by all.

Tomorrow night is opening session, and I encourage all interested to listen in at
the ACB Radio site

Blackjack in the Desert

Hello all! Just to quickly let you know that it's all going on here for sure! I played BlackJack yesterday, won back all my money and nearly doubled it. I'm off to have a few games now with my dear friend, Scott Marshall.

We had a great day yesterday, seeing dear friends and sharing lots of laughter. Had dinner with Jonathan Mosen and his partner, Julia. She seems a very nice person, and is an accomplished floutist.
